Of the many disruptions generative AI has caused in education, the biggest one is arguably to the learning and teaching of writing. In this session, we’ll collaborate to design student-centered, pedagogically sound responses to that disruption. We’ll begin by defining the essential, research-based reasons to teach writing, even in an AI age. Then, in a series of design sprints, we’ll assess our own writing assignments, testing their “AI vulnerability” and looking at both AI-resistant and AI-assisted strategies for addressing that vulnerability. Participants will be provided with design templates and generative AI tools to support their work. Our goal is to leave the session with a clear plan for redesigning a writing assignment so that it remains valuable and relevant in an AI age.
Participants should have in mind a sample writing assessment or project they want to work on. They should come to the session with digital access to that assignment’s description, rubric, models of student work (anonymized), and any other materials they might provide students to help them succeed on that assignment.
*This session has been updated to reflect progress in AI.
